Patricia Vass Tribute

PATRICIA DECHANTAL VASS, 68, known as Chan, left this world on Saturday, December 2, 2023 surrounded by those she loved most. She was born Nov. 10, 1955 in Huntington, a daughter of the late Charles E. Meadows Sr.  and Patricia Ann Stewart Meadows. Her beautiful spirit will continue to ignite and fuel the many people she touched and the causes she fought so hard for.

Chan graduated from Barboursville High School and Marshall University. Over the course of a lifetime, she lived many lives. And while she worked for 21 years in hospital administration, she was not a person defined by her career. She was first and foremost a person who helped those who needed help and an incredible mother to her son and anyone who needed the presence and affection of a “bonus mom.”

With her brilliant smile, she never met a stranger and cultivated countless deep friendships. Chan’s love for people radiated from deep within her massive heart and expressed itself in a natural, classic beauty – her gorgeous blonde mane and beautiful blue eyes that carried compassion for anyone in need.

Be it someone standing on the corner with no coat, a stray dog limping along, or even a young checkout clerk with eyes swollen from crying, Chan was immediately invested. This empathy extended to a fiery political passion. She marched in the 70’s for equal rights and could talk about politics all day. She also was a masterful gardener, a certified yoga teacher, and made the best fried chicken ever.

She is survived by her husband and best friend of 24 years, Charles C. Somerville along with her son and the light of her life William Kyle Vass III of Wayne and her beloved “bonus children,” Maella Bouchard of Alexandria, Va. and Aedan Somerville of Martinsburg. Her surviving siblings are, Bebe Meadows of Huntington, Ann and Ralph Hensley of Ashland, Ky., George and Shin Chang Meadows of Fredricksburg, Va., Chris and Becky Craig Meadows of Dandridge, Tenn., Mary and Tommy Smirl of Huntington, and Michael and Stephanie Melmige Meadows of Huntington. Chan is also survived by countless nieces, nephews, great and grand who loved their Aunt Chaney dearly. She is preceded in death by her mother, father, and Charles E. Meadows Jr.

Words simply cannot convey how deeply she loved life. A celebration of Chan’s life will be held from 6 to 8pm on Wednesday, December 13th at the Our Lady of Fatima Parish Hall in Huntington. A remembrance of her life will begin at 7:30pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Harmony House,627 4th Ave, Huntington, WV 25701 https://harmonyhousewv.networkforgood.com/projects/37203-harmony-housem.
