Joan Marie Hughes

November 7, 1931 ~ December 20, 2023 (age 92) 92 Years Old

Joan Hughes Tribute

Joan Marie Hughes, 92 of Coal Grove, OH, peacefully departed from this world on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, with family by her side.

Joan was born November 7, 1931, in Huntington, WV- daughter of the late Raymond Edward and Mabel Jean Boley-Workman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the love of her life, CJ Hughes Jr., a sister, Helen Pritchard, and brother, William “Bill” Workman.

Joan- proudly known as “Nanny,” is survived by her loving family- a daughter, Carla Bennett, a granddaughter, Savannah Bennett and spouse, Amanda Bennett, and most importantly, her pride and joy: a great-granddaughter, Maddison Delawder.

Additionally, Joan is also survived by a sister, Judy Taylor, and a brother, Butch Workman.

Joan also leaves behind her fuzzy best friend and “grand puppy,” Serenity Gail.

Joan did everything throughout life from a place of love for humankind. Joan was spunky, hardworking, and selfless. She was a devoted Christian and lived and loved as such. Joan waited 22 years to fulfill her dream of becoming a mother, then waited another 40 years to complete her dream of becoming a grandmother. Nevertheless, it is without question that Joan’s dreams were completely fulfilled with the addition of her great-grandchild.

No matter how unorthodox her family’s life desires were, she always supported them whole-heartedly without question. Her granddaughter proudly and appreciatively accredits Joan in all of her successes, as they would be non-existent without her gracious love and support.

Joan acquired many “adoptive” children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren throughout the years from the close friend groups of her family; all loved and cared for her equally.

Joan called many places “home” throughout her life, from Huntington, West Virginia, to St. Augustine, Florida. Joan most recently planted her roots in Coal Grove, OH, almost 15 years ago, in which she happily resided with her daughter and grand-puppy. Joan found peace and enjoyment in tinkering at home, reading her bible, continually sewing, and repairing tattered dog toys, gardening, and spending time with her loved ones.

Those who knew Nanny would say without question, she was “one in a million.” There will never be another quite like her; a definite angel on Earth who loved all and lived selflessly. The loss of our beloved Nanny will indefinitely leave a hole in our hearts- undoubtedly never able to be filled again. Fortunately, Nanny’s memory will continue to live vicariously through the lives of those she has impacted.

A graveside memorial service will be held at Woodmere Memorial Park on Friday, December 29th at 11am.
