Nellie Frances King Hughes, 89, widow of Hurley L. Hughes went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 21, 2009. Born December 21, 1919, Nellie was the youngest of the twelve children of the late Cora and William A. King of Martha, WV. Nellie was raised in a loving home and developed the traditional values of those who were part of the greatest generation. She went to Barboursville High School and graduated first in her class when she was only sixteen. She developed into a good Christian woman, devoted wife, and loving mother. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Nellie became a career woman. After a short period in the private sector, she became a paralegal for the City of Huntington. Many of the young assistant attorneys gave Nellie credit for "showing them the ropes" of practicing law in City Hall. During her tenure of working for the city, she served as an officer for the Legal Secretaries of Huntington organization. Service was an important ideal for Nellie. She served God during her fifty-year membership at the former 20th Street Baptist Church, most notably as a Sunday school teacher in the kindergarten department. She was proud of her husband Hurley's service during World War II; she was also a member of the Buford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. After retiring in.1985, Nellie developed an interest in needle arts. Although she machine sewed clothes for her daughters (and their dolls), she found great pleasure in needlepoint, cross stitch, and quilting. Nellie was a beautiful, quiet, intelligent woman who went about her life in an unassuming way. She was truly a "good and faithful servant," who instilled in her children Christian ethics and taught them to love through example. Surviving her are three daughters: Charlotte and her husband, Larry Clark; Suzanne and Bob Byrom, Lisa and Tom Kline; four grand children: Scarlett Nell (Tim) Bright, Derek (Susan) Meador, Nick (Jamey) Kline, and Adam Kline; nine great grand children and two great, great grandchildren; and a caring angel, Kim Bahawi, who gave "Granny" love, comfort and joy, and who gave her daughters peace of mind and warm friendship. Friends may call on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 from 1 – 2 pm at Beard Mortuary of Huntington; the service will be held on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Huntington, 1101 6th Avenue, Huntington, WV 25701. Online condolences may be conveyed to the family at www.beardmortuary.com
