Obituary

Marlene Kay Sheets peacefully left this world on August 23, 2026, following a long, difficult health battle which she fought with courage and tremendous strength. Marlene was born May 3, 1948, in Huntington, WV to the late Bob and Evelyn Lawrence.

She was retired from the Cabell County school system. Depending on when you met Marlene, you might have found her traveling the world with her husband, dressed up and giggling with friends in her Red Hats group, waltzing across the dance floor at a reenactment in a Civil War era dress, or even as an extra in the Huntington-based movie “Teenage Strangler”. In recent months, earning Bingo bucks, attending musical performances, and spending time on the porch with her friends and fellow residents at The Wyngate at RiversEdge gave her much joy. She was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church of Huntington, a church and congregation she loved deeply.

In addition to her parents, Marlene was preceded in death by her brother, Michael Lawrence of St. Augustine, FL. She is survived by her husband and love of her life, Mike Sheets; sister, Patricia Lawrence (Jimmy); daughter, Amy (Tim) Dillon all of Huntington; stepdaughter and stepson, Jennifer and Mike Sheets of Mesa, AZ, and her grandson and light of her life, Kevin (Mandy) Dillon of Fincastle, VA. She was very proud of her family and loved to tell anyone she met all about them.

Friends and family will gather to honor Marlene’s life at Beard Mortuary in Huntington on Friday, August 28, 2026 with Pastor Scott Sears officiating. The service will be held at 2:00 pm with a visitation beginning at noon. The burial will take place at Woodmere Memorial Park. Donations in her honor may be made to First United Methodist Church, 1124 5th Avenue, Huntington, WV 25701. Please leave a condolence for Marlene’s family on her guestbook.
