Larry was a 1957 graduate of Huntington East High School, where he proudly played baseball. He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1962.
In 1963, Larry attended Marshall University and began his career with International Nickel Company (INCO). After retiring from INCO, he later returned as a subcontractor for Special Metals and Haynes International. He also played shortstop for INCO in the Industrial Baseball League. During the late 1980s, Larry served as the local television station statistician for Marshall University football.
Larry devoted much of his life to athletics and youth sports. He coached Huntington Little League baseball alongside Jerry Chapman, James Young, and Jack King; Huntington Eastern Babe Ruth with Shag Verbage; Enslow Youth Football with Hallie Gould; and Beverly Hills Buddy Basketball. He also umpired for Little League, Babe Ruth, Senior Babe Ruth, high school baseball, and college baseball.
In addition to coaching, Larry was an accomplished athlete himself. He played slow-pitch and fast-pitch softball, competed in an Independent Basketball League, and bowled in two INCO leagues, as well as a “His and Hers” league with his wife, Joyce.
Larry was a longtime, faithful member of Open Door Baptist Church, where he also served as a Deacon.
