IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Kevin Matthew
Maynard
October 26, 1973 – January 26, 2026
Kevin Maynard, 52, of Huntington, WV, passed away Monday at Cabell Huntington Hospital following a tragic accident. He was born 10/26/73 in Bluefield, WV to Charles and Nina Maynard of Georgetown, SC; husband of Wendy Brown Maynard, father to Jordan Maynard, and stepson J.D. Berry (Jayla) of Lexington, KY, and grandfather to Greyson and Gavin Berry. He was the devoted brother to Lori (Jon) Leggett, of Chesterfield, VA, and Chuck (Kim) Maynard of Princeton, WV, loving uncle to Emily (Zach) Campbell, Makaila (Bailey) Parker, Matthew (Danielle) Maynard, and Hunter (Avery) Miller, and son-in-law of Beverly Brown (and the late Dale Brown).
He attended Glenwood Elementary and Junior High, graduating from Princeton High School in 1991. He attended Bluefield State University prior to joining the United States Army. He completed his initial training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, later stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. During his time in the military, he served as military police and a combat medic, also receiving his American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) certification. He completed his military career in the Army Reserves, after many years of service.
Kevin relocated to Huntington, WV after "chasing a woman", of which he caught and married on 3/27/1999. Wendy was the love of his life, and he held her on a pedestal. Anyone that knew them could easily see the love they shared, both serving as each other’s “person” and soulmate. Through the marriage, he was honored to gain a stepson, J.D,, loving him as his own. Later, a blonde hair, blue eyed girl named Jordan stole his heart, of which he was so very proud. Kevin lived for his "girls" and J.D. and was a doting husband and father. There was nothing these three couldn't talk him into, and he would have moved heaven and earth for them.
Kevin was blessed to witness the marriage of J.D and Jayla, his childhood sweetheart, as well as gain two grandchildren, Greyson James (4 years) and Gavin Patrick (1 month). He enjoyed watching these two become homeowners and parents and was extremely proud of their growing family.
Kevin was also exceedingly proud of his daughter Jordan. It was evident when he spoke of her, how deeply his love ran. He never missed an event, was her biggest cheerleader, and willing to share her accomplishments with anyone willing to listen. After claiming he never wanted children as a young man, he was the best girl dad anyone could have.
In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, Kevin was an animal lover. He had four dogs that occupied his time as he and Wendy navigated their recent empty nest. They rescued Lola, boxer mix, as well as purchased Maddie, miniature Dachshund, Jethro, black labrador, and Ellie, yellow labrador. Every time another dog came home, after saying he didn’t want any more, he ultimately spoiled them like his own children.
Kevin also fiercely loved his immediate family. Being the baby, he had a special relationship with his parents, especially his mom. He loved his sister and brother endlessly, even when Lori bossed and kept him in line and Chuck taught him the school of hard knocks. He was a devoted son, brother, and uncle, always quiet on the sidelines but ready anytime they needed him.
Over the years Kevin also adopted many as his own. His home was always open to friends of the children, and there were often overnight guests, trampoline parties, firepit evenings, and extras on vacation. He was also a "soccer dad", watching many young ladies grow up alongside Jordan, always cheering on the sidelines during practices, camps, and games. Being with his kids allowed little time for personal hobbies, but he wouldn’t have changed anything.
Kevin was employed at St. Mary's Medical Center the last 17 years, working Inhouse Construction. During this time, he made several lasting friendships, both within his department and the medical center. His wife, also a nursing administrator at SMMC, often gave him “other duties as assigned”, where he informally became known as the “Nursing Liaison”.
Kevin’s large personality, quick wit, and easy smile will be missed. Honoring his wishes, a private viewing for family will take place on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at Beard Mortuary. A Celebration of Life will take place Friday, January 30, 2026, from 4:00pm – 6:00pm at the Moose Lodge, 4341 US Route 60 East, Huntington, WV 25705. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you join them Friday for the Celebration of Life, and bring your favorite memories of Kevin to share.
