Dr. John Paul Sheils, 89 of Miami Springs, FL, formerly of Huntington, WV, passed away Monday, January 20, 2025. He was born in Huntington on June 17th, 1935, along with his twin brother William Sol Sheils, to the late Raymond Taylor and Mary Alice (Chain) Sheils.
John graduated from Huntington East High School in 1953, Marshall University Summa Cum Laude in 1957, and Medical College of Virginia AOA in 1960. He then served his internship at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, VA in 1961 and his Pathology Residency at Cabell Huntington Hospital from 1964 to 1968. John married Carolyn Jean Sayre and they were married for 68 years before her passing in 2023.
Dr. Sheils was a member of the Cabell Huntington Medical Staff since 1962. He was also a past member of medical staffs of Lawrence County Medical Hospital, Doctor's Memorial Hospital, Huntington Hospital, and Pleasant Valley Hospital. He was Past Chief of Staff at Cabell Huntington Hospital and Past Director of Laboratories there as well. Additionally, Dr. Sheils was Past President and Director of Pathologist Services Group Inc. and Professor of Pathology for Marshall University School of Medicine.
He was a Fellow at the College of American Pathologists and the American College of Clinical Pathologists and a Member of the Cabell County Medical Society, WV Medical Association, WV Association of Pathologists and AMA Past President.
John was a Veteran, serving active duty for the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1964. He was a long time member of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church and was a member of their choir. He was also a Kentucky Colonel, past member of the Guyan Golf and Country Club, devoted golfer, avid photographer, computer user and teacher. John and Carolyn moved to Miami, Florida in 2010, where they were members of Christ Journey Church, Coral Gables, Fl.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Jean Sheils. He is survived by his two children, John Taylor (Rose) Sheils and Julie Sheils Dweck-Rodriguez. He was also a proud and adoring grandfather to 5 grandchildren, Alexis (Edwin) Collins, Jonathan (Christine) Dweck, Christopher (Anyis) Dweck, Jacob (Annie) Dweck and Joseph (Daylene) Rodriguez. He was also a great-grandfather to Katie Collins, Juliana Collins, Emma Collins, Sara Collins, Lila Collins, Victoria Dweck, Sienna Dweck, Jace Dweck, Aaron Dweck, Eli Dweck, Ethan Dweck and Madison Dweck and great-great-grandfather to Adalyn Bradford.
A Funeral Service will be Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 1 PM at Beard Mortuary, with Rev. DaVontae Edwards officiating. Visitation will be held beforehand from 12 to 1 PM. Burial to follow at Spring Hill Cemetery. Please leave an online condolence for his family at www.beardmortuary.com.
