John Edward Cooney

John Edward Cooney left his earthly family on Thursday June 23, 2016 to join his heavenly family. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Beard Mortuary with Rev. Steve Hamrick and Rev. Bill DeMoss officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. He was born August 21, 1926 in Nashville, TN the son of the late Hugh Joshua and Sarah "Clydie" Woodson Cooney. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters Sarah Elizabeth Collier Wolfe and Helen Landis Haun and a great-granddaughter Kendall Swann.  He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Bethanne Beckwith Cooney, five daughters Mary Elizabeth (Ed) Shuff, Brenda Kay (Tim) Long, Terri (Billy) Burns, Phyllis Boyce and Rebecca "Becky" (Mark) Cooper; a son John Hugh Cooney, twelve grandchildren, twenty-one and one due any day great-grandchildren and one and one on the way great-great grandchildren and many special nieces and nephews. John served his country in the United States Navy from 1944-1946. In civilian life, John was employed by Nabisco Corporation for 40 years retiring in 1987. After retirement John and Bethanne enjoyed traveling in their motor home with friends visiting many places within the US. They traveled a number of years with their friends to Florida as "snowbirds".  John was very active at Otterbein United Methodist Church where he played on the Church League Softball Team and also bowled for quite a number of years on Church Bowling League. John was an excellent cook and shared his love of cooking at Otterbein preparing Wednesday night dinners. John religiously cooked dinner for his family on Sunday's after church and all holidays. John was a member of Community of Grace United Methodist Church since its inception. The family would like to thank John Taylor with CCCSO for taking care of John at home for a number of years and the staff at the VA Medical Center, River Bend Healthcare and to Hospice of Huntington. The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Duffy at the VA Medical Center and to the VA Home Base primary care for their diligent care for the past two years.
