Howard Lee Sheets

May 12, 1924 — February 24, 2015

On February 24, 2015, HOWARD LEE SHEETS, 90, of Chesapeake, Ohio walked through the Valley of the Shadow of Death and into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Beard Mortuary with Rev. Roger Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Woodmere Memorial Park.  He was born May 12, 1924 in Gallipolis, Ohio, the eldest son of Oscar Paul and Mary Fern Houck Sheets.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Helen Charlene Cartwright Sheets and one brother, Roy Edward Sheets.  He was a graduate of Huntington East High School in 1942 and attended Marshall University. Howard served his country in the Army Air Corps 14th in the Air Force in China/Burma Theater during WWII.  He was employed as a cost estimator by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, retiring after thirty-eight years of service.  Following his retirement, he worked with the Huntington Area Habitat for Humanity. When his sons were young, Howard was one of the Assistant Scoutmasters for Boy Scout Troop 52 and would reminisce about pranks pulled on unsuspecting victims freezing on their camping outings in the winter snow or going canoeing in the summer. Additionally, he served as the player agent for the Chesapeake Little League, and helped in designing and constructing the floating concession stand he referred to as "The Ark". He was scorekeeper for many years for Chesapeake High School home track meets. He was a Deacon for the former Highlawn Baptist Church and served as Deacon and Trustee for Baptist Temple of Huntington, WV. He is survived by a daughter, Maryellen (Marr) Sheets Blankenship of Proctorville, OH and two sons, Gary Lee (Sharon) Sheets of Hamilton, OH and David Howard (Lisa) Sheets of Proctorville; five grandchildren, Stacie (Nate) Smithson, Matthew (Michelle) Sheets, Douglas (Tara) Sheets, Lynsey (Scott) Pun and Marcie Bullock; four great-grandchildren, Morgan and Raegan Fridley, Madison Sheets and soon to arrive Baby Pun. Additional family includes his step-grandchildren, Brittany (Jason) Hicks and C.J. Shepard; two step great-grandchildren, Landon and Roman Hicks, and his youngest brother, Harold (Emma Belle) Sheets of Chesapeake, OH and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Baptist Temple, Habitat for Humanity or Hospice of Huntington.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.beardmortuary.com.  The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5:00 -7:00 pm at Beard Mortuary.
