Garneta Ruth Hawk

Garneta Ruth Hawk, 88, of Huntington, passed away on June 16, 2018 at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Born February 21, 1930 in Lewis County, KY, she was a daughter of the late Wilbur and Hazel Secrest Childrey. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, George Daniel Hawk; her brother, Bill Childrey and two special grandparents, Walter and Maggie Childrey. Ruth was a member of Sixth Avenue Church of Christ where she volunteered in the nursery and was active in the women's group. She began her teaching career in 1951 in Lewis County, KY, and later taught 1st grade in Cabell County retiring in 1988. Ruth loved cooking dinners for church and baking cakes for her friends and family. She also enjoyed knitting and belonged to the Beverly Hills Library knitting group where she crafted over 100 prayer shawls for hospice. Ruth is survived by her son, Jim (Jean) Hawk of Huntington; siblings, Tom (Brenda) Lykins of Portsmouth, OH and Norma Jean (Jim) Walden of Mt. Orb, OH; sister-in-law, Dolores Childrey of Vanceburg, KY; many special teacher friends and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at the White Chapel Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Barboursville, with Minister Jeff Garrett, officiating. The family will welcome friends one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be sent to Sixth Avenue Church of Christ, 530 20th Street, Huntington.
