Garland M. Johnston

Garland M. Johnston, 83, of Huntington, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2009 in St. Mary's Medical Center.  Funeral service will be conducted 2:00 PM, Sunday, March 8, 2009 at Beard Mortuary with Pastor Jerry Matt officiating.  Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery.  He was born August 26, 1925 in Huntington, WV, a son of the late James and Ethel Johnston.  He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Callicoat and Gwendolyn Newman; two brothers, Raymond and James Johnston; one daughter, Yvette Sue Carpenter.  Garland was an honorably discharged veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army signal corps and was a Kentucky Colonel.  His love for his family was first and foremost in his life.  He took great joy in spending time and sharing stories with family and friends.  His easy smile and sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who loved him.  He is survived by his loving wife, Doralie Foster Johnston; one granddaughter and her husband, Lisa Renee and Paul Ward; one special neice, Gayle Johnston Whitley; six additional nieces and nephews, several great and great-great nieces, nephews, and his faithful cat, "TUX".  Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 PM on Sunday, prior to the service at Beard Mortuary.
