Eiland Keith Dean, 84, of Huntington passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Cabell-Huntington hospital. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, 2011, at Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church, 5th Avenue & 10th Street, Huntington with Pastor John W. "Jack" Lipphardt officiating. He was born July 2, 1926 in Huntington, a son of the late Levi J. Dean and Susie Ada Dean. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Levi and Brooks; three sisters, Dolly, Madge and Marlowee; two half-sisters, Creola and Pauline and one half-brother, Wayland Dean. Mr. Dean was a veteran of the US Navy, having served in World War II. He and his brother, Brooks continued the business established by Levi J. Dean in 1910. In 1956, they established Dean & Dean Architects, which is now Edward Tucker Architects, Inc., where Keith was a consultant. Keith was appointed by three different governors for six terms serving on the State Board of Architects, spanning 30 years. Some of the buildings he designed were the Marshall Student Center, Smith Hall, Corbly Hall, Harris Hall, the campus Christian Center, the Communication Center, Cabell County Public Library, Huntington Federal Bank, several buildings for the Prestera Center and he worked with Harry Bertoia, sculptor who designed the Memorial Fountain on Marshall University's campus. He is survived by his wife, Mayor Jean Dean; two daughters, Paula (Steve) Maas of Newton Falls, OH and Carol (Dean) Hall of Nashville, TN; stepchildren, Diana (Terry) Bishop of Huntington, Justin (Michelle) Gibson of Ashland, KY and Keith (Robin) Gibson of Union, KY; four grandchildren, Jennifer Maas (Jeff) Alexander of Charlotte, NC, Krista Maas of Johannesburg, South Africa, Kiley Maas of Newton Falls, OH and Craig Maas of Newton Falls, OH; three step grandchildren, John (Laura) Bishop of Huntington, Chelsea Gibson of Union, KY and Kyle Hunter Gibson of Union, KY; and one step great grandchild, Alison Bishop. Friends may call from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church.
