David H. Mewaldt

April 23, 1914 — February 4, 2010

David H. Mewaldt, 95, formerly of La Crosse, WI, passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2010 at the Emogene Dolin-Jones Hospice House in Huntington, WV. He was born on April 23, 1914 in Bird Island, MN, son of the late Rt. Rev. I.R. Mewaldt and Susan Jacobson Mewaldt.  After attending college at Lawrence University, he taught history and music at Baldwin High School in Baldwin, WI before entering the army during WWII.  Following the war, he directed the band at Tomah High School in Tomah, WI and did his graduate work at Northwestern University and the University of Wisconsin – Madison.  From 1952 to 1983, he was on the music faculty at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse where he served as Chair of the Music Department for most of his career.  In La Crosse he directed the choir at the First Congregational Church and community productions of the Messiah.  He was a member of the La Crosse Symphony and its board as well as Kiwanis.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Harriette Anderson Mewaldt, and brother Richard Mewaldt. He is survived by a sister, Ruth Johnson of Aurora, IL, four sons, Richard Mewaldt (Sandra) of Altadena, CA, Steven Mewaldt (Cheryl Connelly) of Huntington, WV, John Mewaldt of Racine, WI, and James Mewaldt (Ruth) of Denver, CO; nine grandchildren, Kirsten, Todd, Andrew, Christian, Rebecca (Jedd Williams), Gregory, Rachel, Aaron and Sarah; and three great-grandchildren, Brandon, TJ, and Emily. Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at 2:00 pm at the Enslow Park Presbyterian Church in Huntington, WV with Rev. Chris Perkins officiating.  Burial will be at Zoar Cemetery in Carver Co., MN.  Friends may call on Tuesday evening from 6 - 8 pm atBeard Mortuary in Huntington, WV.
