The world lost the most amazing young man on July 4, 2024. Braxton McComas was born in Huntington, WV on January 9, 2007 and died on July 4, 2024. He is survived by his parents, Amanda Carter Mercer and Jason Lee McComas; his brothers, Gavin and Thomas Mercer; his paternal grandparents, Debbie and Vince McComas; his maternal grandparents, Lola and Jeff Carter; his great grandparents, Harold and Carolyn Brown; and many loving uncles, aunts and cousins.
Braxton was starting his senior year at Cabell Midland High School, where he was a straight A student. He was working on college applications, where he hoped to earn a degree in Astrophysics and then work for NASA. He loved math and science, especially the study of space. He loved to use his telescope to take pictures of stars and planets. His goal was to uncover the unknown in space. Braxton was also a gifted musician. He studied drums with Gordon Campbell, was self taught on the piano, guitar, banjo, and ukulele. He loved playing music with his friends. He was in the Cabell Midland Marching Band his freshman and sophomore years. He also played Lacrosse his sophomore and junior years and was looking forward to playing in his senior year. He enjoyed skiing, fishing, hiking and camping, and was in his element in the outdoors. Braxton was always an animal lover and recently began volunteering at the Huntington Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter.
But the most important thing about Braxton was his amazing spirit and how he touched others. He always put the needs of others first. He cared for his friends and their well being. He tried to be an example to others by not drinking, smoking or doing drugs. He had an amazing maturity to his ability to understand life and his capacity to listen to others. Braxton looked out for the younger children in the neighborhood and was the best friend of all his adult neighbors. He loved to stop by his neighbors and talk or play music. He loved his friends and stood by them in thick and thin. Braxton had an easy going way about him and never met a stranger. He was the perfect son, grandson, cousin and nephew. His family was the most important thing to him. When with family or friends, Braxton never left without hugging everyone and telling them he loved them. His smile just lit up the room.
Braxton's life was cut short by a drunk driver. His family would like you to honor Braxton's life by never drinking and driving. There are no second chances. In lieu of flowers, we are requesting donations be sent to the Huntington Animal Shelter.
Visitation will be held Monday, July 8, 2024 from 5 to 7 PM and a Funeral Service will be Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at 1 PM, both at Lewis Memorial Baptist Church.
