HELGA ANN MCCLUNG, a long-time resident of the Woodlands in Huntington, West Virginia, passed away on May 31, 2014.  She was 92 years old. Helga was born in Dessau, Germany on July 27, 1921 to Walter and Helena Lenger. Her father was a chemist who worked in both Germany and America, so Helga and her sisters led an international life, speaking both English and German. After completing finishing school in Switzerland, she became a dancer for the famous German Scala (an opera and theatrical company) and traveled throughout Europe during World War II.  She married Gert Hein in 1941 and gave birth to a son, Roger.  In 1950 she and her son moved to La Jolla, California where she worked for the Bank of America. In 1953 she married Captain Daryl McClung who had practiced dentistry in Huntington, West Virginia with his father before joining the Navy. The new family, Helga, Daryl, and sons Roger and Daryl junior, were subsequently stationed in Miami, Florida; Quantico, Virginia; and Jacksonville, North Carolina. Upon Captain McClung's retirement in 1967, he and Helga moved to Huntington where Helga made many new friends as a school teacher and an active volunteer at the Huntington Museum of Art. Helga was preceded in death by her husband, Daryl, and her sisters, Lilo LaRave and Anita Heinzelman. She is survived by her sons, Daryl junior and Roger; her grandson, Scott McClung and his wife, Stacie and four great grandchildren, Grace, Lydia, Elijah and Anna Claire. Interment will be held on Friday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. at Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington. Beard Mortuary is assisting the family.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Huntington Museum of Art.  The McClung family would like to thank the many wonderful people of Huntington and the Woodlands who lovingly cared for her in her final years.
