Sumter, SC... Arthur “Bruce” Robertson died Monday, May 26, 2014, of a heart attack while riding his bicycle on Mill Pond Creek near his home in Sumter, SC. He was 72.
A beloved professor of chemistry and physics at the University of South Carolina-Sumter, Bruce was born on April 16, 1942 in Huntington, W.Va. He graduated from Huntington East High School in 1960 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, where he served for eight years as a rifleman. During this time, Bruce received a B.S. in chemistry from Marshall University in 1964, and a M.S. and Ph.D. in polymer science from Akron University, a national leader in that field, in 1968.
Bruce then spent 40 years in research and business development at Global Fortune 500 companies, including Honeywell Corporation, Ausimont USA (now Solvay Corporation) and Engelhard Corporation (now BASF Corporation), where he was a co-inventor for more than 20 patents.
Bruce retired from corporate work in 2006 and moved to Lompoc, Calif., to be near family. During this time, he taught polymer science and business technology at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He moved to Sumter in 2010, where he enjoyed being a full time grandfather.
Bruce was an active member of the YMCA of Sumter. He attended Holy Comforter Church and was also active St. Anne Catholic School. He was a leader with Destination Imagination, an international creative-thinking and problem-solving competition for young students, and spent the last week of his life at the global competition finals in Knoxville, Tenn.
Bruce is survived by three sons: Mr. and Mrs. Mark (Lisa) Robertson of Destin, Fl.; Mr. and Mrs. Paul (Susannah) Robertson of Livingston, Mt. and Mr. and Mrs. Mark (Cheryl) Hollinger of Littleton, MA; daughter-in-law: Annabelle Robertson, of Sumter, SC; and six grandchildren: Dorothea Faith Robertson and Georgia Grace Ruth Robertson of Sumter, SC; Sophia Francis Robertson and Georgia Byrd Robertson of Livingston, Mt.; and Mary Ruth Hollinger, Graham Hollinger and Thomas Hollinger of Littleton, MA. He was predeceased by his wife of 22 years, Ruth Carlson Robertson.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 11:00 am at Beard Mortuary, 3001 3rd Ave, Huntington, WV with the family recieving friends one hour prior to the service. A committal service will follow in Rome Cemetery, Proctorville, Ohio.
